Maryland General Assembly Careers
The Human Resources Office is responsible for staffing and
overseeing personnel operations for Maryland General Assembly (MGA)
administrative, leadership, and member offices. Members of the General Assembly
may request assistance from the Human Resources Office in hiring staff, or they
may hire staff directly. MGA employees perform administrative and support
functions, working directly for an individual member or in a delegation office
(group of members by district), standing committee, or leadership office.
Positions include legislative clerk, legislative secretary, legislative
assistant, and administrative assistant.
Functions performed by employees in these positions vary but
may include answering and directing telephone calls, assisting callers and
visitors by supplying legislative information, maintaining a member's calendar,
data entry, maintaining a filing system, composing correspondence, and
preparing other types of legislative documents. In addition, administrative
assistants may supervise clerical staff, arrange legislative meetings and
hearings, prepare legislation, attend hearings, and provide guidance to members
on legislative issues.
Testing for Secretarial Positions for the Legislative
Session occur in the fall.
