How to Apply

The Department of Legislative Services (DLS) provides nonpartisan, professional staffing to the Maryland General Assembly (MGA). The Maryland General Assembly offers careers and temporary positions with legislators and committee staffs. The Department of Legislative Services posts specific job openings as they occur. It is the policy of the Department and the General Assembly that all personnel practices will be administered on the basis of merit without regard to age, ancestry, color, creed, marital status, national origin, race, religious affiliation, belief or opinion, sex or sexual orientation, or mental or physical disability.

DLS and MGA offer exciting and challenging opportunities to work directly with legislators. The legislative environment can be fast-paced and dynamic. Staff must be able to adapt to the changing needs and priorities of the General Assembly, while providing the highest quality of staff support. Additionally, the legislative work environment is unique; the General Assembly never closes for the 90 days that it is in session. Typically, staff can expect to work longer than the normal 8-hour workday and on weekends.

Prior to the convening of the General Assembly each January, a major recruitment effort is undertaken to provide additional, temporary staff for the session. The department's Human Resources Office is responsible for coordinating recruitment activities for DLS in its Annapolis and Baltimore offices, as well as for MGA.

Employees of DLS serve under the Executive Director, who is appointed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House. Employees of MGA, including those hired by individual members, receive personnel services through DLS; however, MGA's employees serve under the presiding officers of the General Assembly and are subject to human resources policies approved by the presiding officers.  To learn more about DLS and MGA career descriptions, click on DLS Careers or MGA Careers.
