Library and Information Services provides reference
and research support to the General Assembly and its staff and legislative
information to the public.
Legislative information is provided by phone, e-mail, or face-to-face
contact or through the distribution of numerous legislative documents.
Staff also coordinates and conducts educational programs for visitors
to the General Assembly, including students, public interest groups,
and legislators and officials from other states and countries.
The Library's collection, consisting of approximately 95,000 volumes,
contains materials concerning Maryland history; enacted and failed
legislation; Maryland code and regulations; codes of other states;
information on public policy topics such as taxes, education, corrections,
health, and the environment; and other reference information of
interest to the legislative researcher. Unique features of the Library's
collection include legislative materials chronicling the legislative
process in Maryland and a newspaper clippings file.
Library staff also writes, edits, or coordinates the preparation
of legislative documents and materials for a diverse audience. Some
publications, required by law, give legal notice of proposed legislation;
others summarize and clarify passed legislation; and still others
are part of the educational programs of the General Assembly.
Individuals with disabilities who need assistance to access programs,
services, and publications of the General Assembly should request
assistance from the ADA Coordinator, Library and Information Services.
